Starting up a 1941 Stearman with a Pratt & Whitney R-985, 450 horsepower engine. Engine has been sitting for 4 months between starts and gives a nice smoke job.

  • I think it's probably best to pull the engine through by hand in lieu of turning it over with the starter. Just my 2 cents. Its your engine.

If the engine has been sitting along time, I use blow out plugs on the bottom jugs. If there is any oil in the jugs, it will drain out when the plugs are pulled, and the blow out plugs will clear out any oil in the intake system. If I have flown the engine recently, I pull it through several times, then turn it over with the starter a few blades, then turn on the mags. Remember to never turn a radial engine backwards as you can force oil into the intake system.
