Prostitution thrives in Singapore - 23 Nov 08

Singapore is one of Asia's wealthiest economies, attracting migrant workers from across the region.

But many of those workers are women who are forced to work in the sex trade due to growing poverty caused by the global economic downturn.

Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley reports.

Its the foreign workers who are involved in this. I don't see local Singaporeans. I can only imagine how pissed off they must be at these foreigner taking advantage of their hospitality.

What Al Jazeera is emphasizing on is sex -trafficking- which means that people are taken against their wishes because they were either lied to that they would be domestic workers here, or they were coerced into it because of debts that snowball at a deliberately incredulous rate. Effectively, those prostitutes were sexually trafficked do not consent to being prostitutes. Sexual trafficking is such a common issue for many nations whether they are developed or not, sadly!
