This wooden air engine is constructed of Baltic birch plywood and hard maple. The wooden piston may be driven by either vacuum or compressed air. There are no piston or valve seals.

The engine is finished with three coats of oil based polyurethane and all friction points are lubricated with SAE 30 non-detergent motor oil. Using my central vacuum system, I measured a speed of about 1050 RPM in the forward direction and 850 RPM in the reverse direction. It really goes! By extending the valve cover on both sides, I was able to furteher increase the speed in the reverse direction to 960 RPM.

I purchased the plans for this engine from Mathias Wandel's website at http://woodgears.ca/. I tweaked the design slightly to get more air through the engine by increasing the movement on the valve assembly. I also raised the flywheel slightly, so that I did not need to notch out the plywood base and I converted all of the dimensions to imperial to suit the baltic birch plywood that was available locally, which is sold in imperial thickenesses.

  • how about on hole blowing and the other one sucking? won't that give it a faster RPM?

  • You should put this in a wooden vehicle and see how fast you can get it to go.

  • Is it possible to construct a wooden air compressor (except for the motor ofcourse) that works?

  • quando não bebem são quietos, já quando bebem soltam a franga

  • Try the guaiac wood (lignum vitae) witch is used for shippropeller.

How it works at 150 celsius degrees?

  • 1:00 wow isn't that the rate that that superhero that runs fast goes couse its like invisible and could u use that for a saw? couse it liks like it can slice stuff!

  • @iAmWafflesSoGTFO Wouldn't that kind of be pointless since the vacuum or blower would use more electricity than you'd generate (per the laws of physics)?

  • you could make light weight personal transport vehicle. some thing like an air powered mini foot scooter.
