Most of the TV appearances were lip synced it was just the way they did TV back then.

@jscottlewis71: The irony is that Cass apparently spent months pestering John and Denny to let her in the group -- they thought her obesity would be bad for the young, sexy image they wanted. But then, of course, her voice ended up totally defining the group's sound, and it's impossible to imagine them without her!

Which worked out brilliantly, since her weaker "girly" voice provided such wonderful counterpoint to Cass's "earth mother" sound.
