This is a rare, live, amateur recording from a concert with Corelli and Tagliavini in 1981. The ending was missing so the last bars from the first verse have been dubbed in for the sake of completeness.

This precious movie is one of the few clips of Zeani singing live in a performance. Her voice is in marvellous condition yet she had regularly been singing huge roles for well over thirty years.

There was an ecstatic review of this concert in "Opera" magazine. Please contact me if you have it as I cannot find my copy.

  • ah, the last few seconds were copied and pasted from earlier in the aria.. i'd love to see how she ended this aria

  • @coryisawake Yes, the original movie just stops short. But there is a complete sound recording elsewhere on my channel of another performance

  • Here's a lesson in vocal supremacy. Zeani's upper register rings with clarity; her lower, so often lacking in sopranos, is refulgent & rich. Uniform from top to bottom, the rich, dark color is luscious. Beautifully phrased, clearly enunciated diction, vocal agility of pure quality, and a personal elegance that shines in every performance! If one is blind, the voice tells the story; if one is deaf, the expressive face and acting convey all. She is a perfectionist; the performance is incomparable

  • Thank you, Charlotte, for this. She is MOVING, AWESOME as always. God bless you, dear Virginia!

    the greatest ever

  • MY GOD. AMAZING

  • Filming, taping, recording concerts in anyway is and was illegal. But I'm nevertheless very glad that many people over the past years made recordings like this one, so that we can be witnesses to great performances.

  • bravaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • Thankyou Charlotte for these wonderful clips and recordings of this great artist. I am from Ireland where Virginia Zeani sang many leading roles during the late 50's / early 60's with Dublin Grand Opera Society. Her roles included Violetta (April 1955) Mimi & Violetta (May 1956) Lucia (April 1958) Amina (April 1960) Desdemonona (June 1964).

  • The following is an extract taken from 'Love & Music - The story of Dublin Grand Opera Society' by Gus Smith. "As a performer Virginia Zeani was loved by the Irish public, as much for her sultry looks as for her luminous voice. That spring of '58 she scored a personal triumph as Lucia. 'The Soprano Night' proclaimed the critics. She dominated the opera by the sheer radiance of her voice".

  • Virginia Zeani is without doubt one of the great singers of our time - thankyou for your postings and for bringing this great artist to the attention of opera lovers all over the world.
