It was a real test flight. This rocket was designed to closely emulate the Ares I first stage flight dynamics, and was designed and launched using the same methods that are being used for Ares I, using Ares I guidance algorithms. Any data relevant to this flight would be relevant and informative to Ares I design.

Neat but was not a real test flight just an RSRM with a can that looks like an upper stage and capsule on the end controlled by an Atlas V guidance system.
Also an unnecessary vehicle as the Delta IV-H already can lift similar payloads.
