On Dec. 1, 2008 well known & respected OPP Constable Laurie Hawkins(Gignac), her husband Richard, son Jordan age 12, and daughter Cassandra age 14 were found by fellow officers within their residence in Woodstock, Ontario after Laurie had failed to report for her next shift. Laurie was rushed to Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital with faint vital signs suffering from the serious effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. Rescue efforts to revive Richard, Jordan and Cassandra failed and were pronounced deceased at their home.
Upon completion of an investigation, it was discovered that a blocked exhaust vent was the cause of the carbon monoxide build-up. The family didn't have a CO detector.
Laurie's 20-year career as an Ingersoll Police Officer & OPP Constable has earned her the highest respect amongst her peers and the titles 'The People's Cop' and 'Our Laurie' from the people she sworn to protect. Richard, Jordan and Cassandra were always a major factor why Laurie donned her uniform; she believed in them, and they believed in her.
Laurie was transported to North Bay the following weekend where Richard & Laurie grew up together so their families could keep vigil of her.
Laurie was reunited with Richard, Cassandra and Jordan in the early morning of Dec. 9, 2008.
This short video to reflect on how we were all touched after hearing the tragic news that fell upon the Hawkins/Gignac families.
Sadly missed, never to be forgotten, memories dearly cherished...
Do your part in preventing a similar tragedy from occurring; contact your local fire administration for info to best protect you & your loved ones. Remember same rule applies as smoke detectors, if CO alarms are sounded...GET OUT, STAY OUT! Call from a neighbours house and wait for emergency personnel to arrive.
