Actually no it wouldn't. The story line was in order. Carlton represents the spoiled rich kid who comes from a world where things like this doesnt happens... BUt will on the other hand comes from the real world where sirtuations like this is everyday occurences. The fact that carlton so easily lost faith in the lawful side of society shows that the most innocent and puriest of hearts could fall. Cliche but written quite well.
