easy to fix a pony motor, easy on the diesel too, glow plugs are a bitch, and I'd rather have a 40 year old cat than a new brand x. sweet old kitty cat.

Several advantages. The pup motor shares the coolant with the big motor so you warm up the main somewhat making the oil work better. You can spin the big motor for a while without it firing so that you get the lubrication system fully working before it has to bear the stresses of operation and there is no battery to worry about depleting and no starter motor that's going to burn out if cranked too long.
The pony can have a crank or its own electric starter,

To add, that if something, was a professional startup of thiskind!

Extra details? AFAIK that is all there is to it.
Of course checking the oil and water beforehand is a given.
I have seen dozers with BOTH pony motor AND electric start, the electric added later, it is on the other side, usually where the pony motor quit and someone later fixed the pony.
