27 March 2008: Today saw the public opening of Heathrow's new Terminal 5 to the public. Unfortunately for the aviation industry and government - who wanted this to be a chance to promote their case for airport expansion - a large section of that public is vehemently opposed to unsustainable aviation growth, and not afraid to show it.

So at exactly 11am this morning, hundreds of people stripped down to reveal identical "Stop Airport Expansion T-shirts", and to highlight the problems caused by airport expansion and unsustainable aviation growth.

  • Fantastic news - climate-wrecking plans for a third runway at Heathrow airport have been axed!

The new Cameron/Clegg government has confirmed that it will not only scrap the third runway at Heathrow, but also refuse additional runways at Gatwick and Stansted. So all our campaigning has finally won out - and a huge thank you is due to everyone who's written to their MP or taken part in one of the many protests demanding that the plan be shelved.

    We won!

  • Want to help bring the government's plans for a 3rd runway at Heathrow to a grinding halt? We've bought a piece of land slap bang in the middle of the proposed 3rd runway site. We're not going to let the runway get built and we need your help. • What a stupid load of f**king tree hugging hippies! The UK economy needs aviation, and you'll all be dead by the time the climate changes for the worst anyway!!! I love my job as Cabin Crew and without Heathrow expansion the future of airlines expanding is bleak. Can't wait for the 3rd runway!!!

  • Aviation is an increasing contributor to the UK's CO2 output, and planes' CO2 emissions in the air carry a further forcing factor due to the height at which they are emitted. As we cut our carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 aviation growth will grow to over 50% of our CO2 output - which is totally unsustainable, so we need to drastically cut back on short-haul flights. The dangers are real and obvious - we have to be sensible enough to adopt the precautionary principle, otherwise we risk disaster.

  • it is amazing to me how someone can piss off this many people

  • Dude it makes total sense, there's shedloads of information out there if you bothered to inform yourself - go to the Greenpeace UK website and type 'aviation expansion' into the search box for starters. Aviation is the fastest growing source of CO2 emissions at a time when we're committing to reduce our total CO2 output by 80% by 2050, plus it puts CO2 right where we don't want it - 30,000 ft up, plus the biggest growth area is short haul flights, whose capacity could be handled by trains...

  • From a passenger and business perspective Heathrow has to expand, take Boston Logan airport for example, it has less than half the traffic and yet has 3 times as many runways. Heathrow can't cope with the number of flights arriving and the lack of space to deal with them, flights are becoming more and more delayed and Heathrow is at max capacity. Too many more flights added to the mix and Heathrow will just come to a halt as there won't be enough gates (for example) to handle the volume.

  • @GreenpeaceUK "climate-wrecking plans", go hug a tree, how do you travel? by foot?

  • aparently they have decided to expand the small runway that goes along the 2

  • it is not a flash mob... look at the definition..

  • it does count as a flash mob - it is a large group of people who assembled in a public place to surprise passers by. the fact it is protest changes it slightly but still it's a really good idea for peaceful, harmless and memorable protest

  • Airports scare the shit out of me. The last thing I'd want to do is fuck around with airport security. After 9/11, the amount of armed (full automatic weapons) being carried around.

It just takes one of them to call you a 'suspect' and poof: You're fucked.

  • хрень какая то .......
