In this talk Jane Emerson provides an introduction to dyslexia. She gives an insightful view as to the causes, symptoms and effects of dyslexia as well as a view on what steps a parent may wish to take to tackle dyslexia.
"By Yale School of Medicine, Pediatric researchers at Yale School of Medicine have identified a gene on human chromosome 6 called DCDC2, which is linked to dyslexia, a reading disability affecting millions of children and adults." - they predict the gene is directly responsible for up to 20%.
She was right on a few issues, but she seems to fail to understand that the larger numbers of males diagnosed with dyslexia (and certain other learning disabilities), is a cultural issue, not a biological one. Basically, behaviors which mark dyslexia in a boy are more likely to be noticed than those that mark dyslexia in a girl- boys tend to respond to difficulties more aggressively than girls and thus receive more attention.
