Reciprocal links don't cut it with the search engines so asking to trade links is a waste of time.

What you are actually looking for are quality contextual links back to your website from a whole variety of channels. Twitter seems to be a hot property of the moment in that respect but a little exhausting for your average small business.

Best thing you can do is focus on creating quality, enjoyable, easy to read and clear content for your website that engages with the visitors. The others will link back to you using contextual links from their websites, blogs, twitter feeds, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.

Consider these facts:

• Most of us will use a search engine to find information on subjects and products we want to know more about.
• 75% will use Google
• 75% will not go past page one of a search
• 75% of the activity on page 1 will be on the top 3 links
• 75% of the click through activity will be on the left hand, natural links

Added together, if you want people to find your website it needs to be top 3 of Google. At the very least page one.

Search Engine Optimisation requires the search engines to regularly re index your web page. This will only happen if:

• Your website content is changing / being added to on a regular basis
• People are visiting your web pages on a regular basis
• The search engines know you exist in the first place!

This process is hugely assisted by you taking some regular internet marketing activity, like:

• Adding great content to your website or blog weekly
• Sending out monthly emails to an opt-in mailing list
• Placing extracts on social media platforms which encourage folk to wander over and take a look.
