The name change was underway before the Recession hit: rebranding was announced April '08, and planned before that.
Name change is a cost-cutting exercise, as they then don't need to advertise NU and Aviva seperately. 'Norwich Union' is also associated with 'expensive and poor service' - name change is an attempt to undergo a transformation in perception.

And i though Sam L Jackson was a dick for doing virgin media adverts! John Mclaine was my hero until this!

As an advert that hinges on Dame Edna Everage banging a gong - you got to have a laugh - 'has beens' incorporated! - who have participated in vulgar part of their soul being shredded down a gutter somewhere - who cares other than the folk been put on the dole by Aviva - not so bright an explosion of an advert as you think -GOLD SURE A LONG ROAD you people are worht nothing
this is a heinous thing to do. the cost of rebranding a product is massively expensive and to do so in a recession and then to pay the people in this advert their huge fees is very, very misguided. what an own goal.

especially with a Liverpool 'icon' when they are closing their Liverpool office and using John Lennons name in the adverts - dont they remember Lennon at the disputes at the docks
