The one sure thing "Captain America: The First Avenger" succeeded at doing is capturing the patriotic spirit of America circa 1940s. And director Joe Johnston was quick to point out that it's their way of paying respect to the superhero's comic book origin. In this interview, we talked about:

Why did he decide to set the film in the 1940s?
The characters of the film
The many incarnations of Captain America
Why did he zero in on Chris Evans for the lead role?
What qualities did he find in the actor?
The Star Spangled scene with music by Alan Menken
