In 1989, the Faroes hosted so called Island Games, which are competitions in different sports among representatives for non-independent, mostly European, islands. This was just after Faroese football got its formal international recognition by joining the world's governing body, FIFA, and one year before the Faroese National team made their debut in real international soccer competitions.

In football tournament that year, the Faroese proved that they were far too strong for the rest of European islanders. The hosts beat Welsh island Ynus Môn (or Anglesey) 6-0, Shetland 4-0 and Greenland 3-0 on their way to the final in Tórshavn, where they met Aland.

The guests from Baltic only managed to resist in the first half and the Faroes even conceded their first and only goal in the tournament after a deflected free kick Haft-time score was quite surprisingly 1-1.

  • This wasn't a final, just the last match of the group, and the Faroes and Åland were 1 and 2 in the group, so the winner would get the gold... which is also why they say the match for the gold, and not the final :)
