James Mason in what became a signature role as Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, justly famed and charismatic Commander of the German Afrika Corps during World War II. Oddly, it isn't about Rommel's exploits in North Africa. Instead, the dramatic thread is Rommel's growing disenchantment with Adolf Hitler as the tide of the war begins to turn against Germany in 1942.
@Hendrikdevuile ...war - Peenemunde, Dam busters, of Battle of Britian...What do you think?
And Im very sorry to hear about your own experiences, it must have been very terrible for you.I must admit my nan didnt talk much about it. She more used to talk about grandad who she was worried about because he served in Burma.

@Hendrikdevuile I believe Hitlers remark to be in fact true. Only relatively recently though are the horrors he inflicted on the other cities &the [peoples suffering really coming to the publics awareness... Have you heard about the row over putting up a memorial to bomber command?Apparaently the Mayor of Dresden says its in bad taste etc - but should another country tell another country how it should commemorate its war ''heroes''? Afterall, its not about Dresden, its about the whole...

@MrsJosephMerrick Adolf said in the movie that London was the only city the English were concerned about.. I am quite ancient and lived through the London Blitz as a young child myself. in Brockley, Lewisham. The houses on every corner of my block were destroyed, I was once strafed and hid behind a tree whilst a woman pushing her baby iin a pram was killed nearby, and I heard the bang and saw the black smoke when a doodlebug fell on a busy department store at New Cross.

@Hendrikdevuile I just remarked (with humour) on the actor's unconvincing accent...
BTW in return, yes of course ...And dont forget the London Blitz - which my grandmother lived through...

@MrsJosephMerrick Yes, he sounds somewhat Jewish, which he did not when speaking German in real life. Btw, he certainly did not refrain from bombing Plymouth,
, Southampton (and Newport in Wales) so heavily that he created "fire-storms" that robbed the air of oxygen, suffocating many inhabitants.
