Pope Benedict XVI's resignation came as a shock to the world's Catholics just days ago.

Now, he has made one of his last remaining public appearances as head of the church.

Benedict thanked the thousands who stood beneath him in the Vatican for coming in such large numbers. And said it was a sign of the affection they showed towards him.

Al Jazeera's Andrew Simmons reports from Rome.
