With established franchises such as Tony Hawk and Skate already on the market, developers need to bring something new to the table if they hope to improve upon the skating game genre. Luckily, Mattieu Begin and Nick Harper of Ubisoft Montreal seem confident that their latest project, Shaun White: Skateboarding, is up to the task.

Begin and Harper describe the team's effort to re-create Shaun White's original vision, inspiring the game's new "influence" mechanic. The surrounding environment changes in response to a successfully landed trick or combo, providing players a new way to incorporate the world around them into their dream trick line. Rails can also be extended or manipulated to link to another section of the environment, letting the player's imagination run nearly without limits.

Begin also explains the different approach taken for the Wii version of the game. From balance board support to competitive multiplayer modes, the Wii version aims to take advantage of the specific strengths of the console.

Shaun White: Skateboarding is on store shelves now and available for the PS3, 360, and Wii consoles!

  • Looks like a really creative twist on the traditional skateboarding game. Nice interview GameZombie!

  • @EnergyEmber Thank you! I agree with you, too. If the studio managed to pull it off in the final game, I'd love to play around with the Influence mechanic. Despite the caps on how long you can extend a rail, I feel like it'd change the way the whole game plays. I'd definitely approach tricklines differently, at the very least.

  • First video I've seen of the new game. I've loved skateboarding games since Tony Hawk 1 on 64. I'm super pumped about this one!

  • @AdamTieck I played Tony Hawk 1, 2, and 4 to death. 2 was probably my favorite though. The score attack goals usually kicked my ass, but unlocking Spiderman and playing around with the game's cheats never seemed to get old.

  • I have this game for the xbox 360 and it is really fun

  • had Shaun White's snowboarding game, i doubt this will be better than the Tony Hawk games, Dyrdek tried and failed too

  • This game looks pretty sweet. Skateboarding games have always been really fun to me. The line customization is really cool

  • Others have said it, but the Influence feature is really innovative. I love they way they presented this game and I honestly think it will be very successful. Thanks for another solid interview GZ!

  • Transforming the environment definitely has me looking more into this game. Being able to "influence" the environment into what the player's envisions makes the possibilities endless. Great video btw!

  • @milzdr09 Absolutely! It's neat that you don't have to scope out a specific line to pull a combo on. It'll be much nicer being able to just make whatever you need for your line of tricks.

  • Nooiiice!~
