When companies merge across national borders, they are commonly said to be facing up to the challenges of globalization. In other words: If you want to survive, you have to be big and strong.
Now employees are applying the same strategy. The largest British union, Unite, and the American Steelworkers Union have merged to become the first transatlantic union. In Britain, only a quarter of all employees are still members of a union; in the United States the figure is down to one in 13. Unions in other industrialized countries are fighting their loss of influence, too. What will this merger bring?
