The story is addapted from an ancient narrative poem called Peacocks flying in opposite direction.

They have to part because Zhongqin's mother doesn't like her daughter-in-law Lanzhi. She would like his son to marry the daughter of a richer family and triesd all kinds of means to be picky with her. Finally Lanzhi could not bear any more and went back to her mother's.

She still loved Zhongqin and would never marry again. At last the couple both commit suicide for frustrated love.They changed into peacocks after death.

It's a sad love story with an ending a bit similar to Butterfly Lovers.

It is also called Shaoxing opera, comes from Shaoxing, Zhejiang province. Usually the actors become famous in Shanghai. The man is not new. Her name Mao weitao. traditional actress playing young guys in yueju.
