Friday February 20th marked the beginning of the biggest weekend of the year in Hollywood.
While movie fans were curious about Benjamin Buttons case and wondered if Milks got it, Hollywood prepares to honor its own(its own?Slumdog Millionaire anyone?)
But The Joker was not the only character being remembered posthumously that weekend. The biggest prize wasnt handed out at the Kodak Theatre on Sunday. And not everyone was converging on Hollywood infatuated with a little guy called Oscar.
Some were there to remember a little guy called Schlitzie, and to bestow upon him the greatest prize of all; a gravestone, a memorial, and Love.
And while Oscars nominees had been waiting almost a month, Schlitzie has waited just a little longer.
Almost 38 years.
The graveside Memorial for Schlitzie was NOT your typical Hollywood event.
There were no costumes. There were no big production numbers. There were no swag bags.
The Schlitzie Memorial was a quiet and dignified ceremony. It will be a spiritual celebration. And those attending were there to truly pay their respect to a man who spent most of his life being called pinhead and freak.
Schlitzie spent almost 40 years entertaining millions around the world and lining the pockets of many promoters, movie studios and artists. Yet the man, through no fault of his own, died penniless in a county convalescent facility and was laid to rest in an unmarked pauper's grave.
It has taken almost another 40 years for Schlitzie to finally get a little something back for all he gave.
There was no carnival. There was no sideshow. There were no movie sets.
There was, however, quiet on the gravesite. There was dignity. There was respect.
And finally, there is, a gravestone for Schlitzie.

Schlitzie was long overdue for a marker for his grave and a memorial celebrating his life. He was a unique and talented performer. This was a wonderful thing done by wonderful people. Well done! And God bless you all.
