You don't need language instruction

I think this extends beyond just languages. Most of my professors are worthless as motivators, and all they do is lecture from a powerpoint.

I find learning in class a bit dry and unnatural. I prefer choosing my own learning material and method.

I'm very happy that I came across your videos. you obviously have the skills to back with you say. have been trying to become fluent in french for many many years. I was thought to myself, we should learn a second language as we start our first 1 by listening for a very long time. will you prove to me that that is a proper way of our language. I will continue to watch your videos and read your blogs online. you are a very good teacher thank you for posting to youtube.

@Iceland1944 right you are to a point. Many kids honestly don't want to learn a new language. But the way it's taught in schools is also an issue. Grammar is clamped down on students so much, which would definitely put aside the interest of any student who still had any desire of such type. The course teachers are given is constructed for the student to Pass the exam...and not to Learn the language.

In my opinion, you do need some lessons just to get you started... like how to properly read and pronounce that specific language you're learning... and from there you can just start learning by yourself. The grammer (nuts and bolls like you said before) will come later naturally with time.

@lingosteve thanks, I try my best.

The classroom is about grading and passing tests.
People are brainwashed, Steve. So many people think they can't do it without a teacher. I am a teacher of languages, and I have seen this time and time again. There is also the motivation factor. Kids today don't care about learning a language, so they will do only the bare minumum in order to pass the class. I wish we could change that.

@Iceland1944 You sound like the kind of teacher that I would like to have, one that is in sympathy with my learning and would be able to inspire me.

I have a strong desire to learn a specific rare language with no formal learning program. Please share techniques or ideas for learning languages with a small amount of material (as compared with what is available for French, German, Russian, Spanish, etc.).

I think that the biggest problem with informal learning is that a lot of people don't know how to go about learning a language on their own. Perhaps it would be beneficial to have a class that teaches people how to go about learning a language. A single class could give someone the skills to learn any language they wanted.

I agree Pilot, but few people are willing to listen.
