NLB urges dads to read to kids
By Joanne Chan | Posted: 04 June 2011 1911 hrs

SINGAPORE: Fathers who wish they can find time to read to their children will get some help and encouragement.

The National Library Board (NLB) is reaching out to those who work irregular hours, through an initiative "10,000 and more fathers reading!".

Reading to children can be a family affair.

It is not just a task for mothers -- fathers too, are encouraged to be involved in their children's literacy development.

The NLB said it would work with companies in the aviation, property, technology and sports industries to rally their staff to take part in reading programmes.

Into its fifth year, the reading initiative for fathers has reached out to more than 60,000 participants.

Reading ambassador and former Singapore national athlete James Wong said: "It's challenging (for fathers) to find time to read to their kids, especially when they come home and they are tired.

"So really, the best time is bedtime when they sit down and read them a nice little story and put them to bed".
