  • Michael,

    Thanks for sharing the video.

What type of 'grafting' knife was Juan using?

    JD

  • @turndav Hi JD, According to Juan, he uses a fixed blade, general purpose, grafting knife. They range in price from $45 and up.

  • Very interesting.. some people us a hot wax.. this seems better.. was there a brand name for the yellow stuff they painted on the graph? There was a medical tape they recommended on someone else's youtube. Parafilm I ordered some ebay

  • @josephdupont I have not heard of using hot wax that might work great. It is important to use a sealer that is not too viscous and paints on well so there are minimal pockets for moisture to form. I am not sure what Juan was using that day but I know some people use Doc Farwell's. I'll have to check out the Parafilm. Thanks for the tip! Michael

  • Could you also graft like any possible combination of trees? For example a mango tree and and cherry tree. Because i Have a plum tree that is getting old and i was wondering if you could graft it with a peach tree. Aldo could you graft a mango to a tangerine tree. Also great video. Lots of useful info.

  • @eliteagle75 Thank you very much eliteagle75. I'm going to graft some dormant apple scions that I have to my pear trees.

  • @llcyll Allow me to answer this. "Yes" you can graft an Apple scion to a pear tree and the opposite. Any kind of apple can be graft to any kind of pear. This is the perfect time to do so in the South California Area. You must find a dormant scion to graft into an active pear. At this time of the year, it is easier to graft a pear into an apple because most apples are waking up from dormacy and Pears are still dormant. You can use teflon tape to seal all air and electrical tape to prevent sunburn

  • Thanks for the video Michael and Juan, I was interested to know if it is possible to graft an apple scion to a pear tree?

  • If it is prepared the right way, a dormant peace can last up to 3 months. Place it in the area where you place your vegetables. Once the wood starts to push out, then is time to graft. Use teflon tape - is a great sealer of air, then on top of it use electrical tape which is elastic and will expand with the wood, then is easy to peel off or the sun will eventually cook it and fall off if you forget to do so after 4 months or so. February is the time to graft in Southern California.
