1. Stip baby off to nothing (towel or disposable changing mat a good option! You'll soon see why)
2. Use some oil (olive oil, sunflower etc but we opted for baby massage gel - sssh just don't tell the hv) and place it on baby's tummy.
3. rest your hands (palms flat) on their tummy for about 10 seconds.
4. Then using the palms of your hands stroke their tummy downwards 6 times. Taking your hand off at the bottom of their tummy and then replacing it back at the top of their tummy. Use both hands and repeat 6 times (it's called the water wheel)/
5. Then bend baby's knees up to their chest for 6-8 seconds (poo may seep out/or wind)
6. Shake legs and straighten.
7. Place your left hand at 10o'clock on their tummy and in a clockwise direction move it around their tummy. When it gets to 5 o'clock put your right hand at 10 and do the same with right hand. You take your left hand all the way round but you take your right off at 5 and then replace it at 10. This is called the sun and the moon.
8. Repeat steps 5and 6 again.
9. Repeat the whole process one more time.

If baby still suffers you can repeat the routine in the night even if it takes you over the three times a day. Also it doesn't matter if baby cries while you are doing it you can continue (where as with normal baby massage you are supposed to stop).

  • My baby's belly is nearly hard as a rock already. Is it okay to go firm? I'm worried. >_>

  • @inayaw I can't see any harm. If their tummy is that bad they clearly have lots to clear out so definately make sure you have a disposable change mat or towel underneath them. You can complete the routine more than 3 times a day (if they need it at night) etc

  • @CaMilGarneau - is that a good or a bad thing?
