How he played it? Beautifully... ;). There are tips to nudge you in the right way on Hunter Robertson's Unfortunate Puppy DVD, and in other sources (Art Rosenbaum's books, Pete Seeges's how to play the 5-string for instance). But I think to play it like Uncle Dave Macon, you had to be him.

Uncle Dave was a remarkable fixture for the musical times he lived in. Nearly all the musicians of his generation garnered him much deserved respect. Those same musicians noted his contributions and tried to preserve some of his old timey brand of music. Doc Watson and Earl Scruggs to name just a few.
