Scratching?? Muting by using your bottom of your palm on your strumming hand and pressing/releasing the chords on the fretboard with the other hand..

it all depends on the wood, mahogany is very mellow sounding, koa is very bright, then you can have spruce or cedar tops which help with projection and make the instrument brighter and louder sounding, hope this helps
