@Kevin113082 You can get 450+ HP out of the 3s-gte motor, but the Crank, well the ENTIRE bottom end of the motor on the 5s-fe is much stronger than the 3s-gte. Believe it or not. It's the way I'm going. I have a blown 5s-fe, gotta find a blown 3s-gte and by May 2012 I'll have me a 450ish HP MKII. But that's just my .02. But since you already have it..go for it. Megasquirt engine management is EXTREMELY easy to set up to manage it all...

@Kevin113082 You will need a standalone ECU. Megasquirt is cheap. It's the route that I'm going because I'm aiming for 450 HP. 5s bottom,(Stronger Crank) 3s head, Cam, Valve work(Will turn it into an interference motor), a LOT larger Turbo, Forged Rods, Pistons, and better than stock Intercooler and everything else needed. Do it right. Don't rid yourself of that 5sfe and work on a Hybrid. It's the way to go. And it's really pretty cheap...

Actually if you do it right 100% with no problems using a stock 3sgte turbo set up, you end up with a SLIGHTLY more powerful 5sfte than the stock 3sgte that spools the Turbo faster. What I'm trying to say is, with the right set up and no problems you end up with a 5sfte that is SLIGHTLY faster than a stock 3sgte.
But..what you should do is keep the 5s bottom, use a 3s top end and build ya up a 400 HP BEAST. Hybrid is the way to go...People who go 500+ HP use a 5s bottom with 3sgte top end...

@oAToMiCx true. with enough money you can make anything fast. i have a 93 mr2 with a 5s-fe. the motor has an intake, exhaust and timing advance and is decent for what it is but paired to a 3s theres no competition without rebuilding the entire engine
-
@bdysntchr7 not really you can still race with the 5s-fe and still be quick just takes some more effort
-
@oAToMiCx may be cheaper but remember the 5s-fe is an economy motor that toyota never indended to be used for racing. thats why they made the 3s-ge and 3s-gte

@darkwarrior1986 nooooo lol its actually better to put in the 5S-Fe Turbo Kit since the swap will cost alot more and you can still have lots of horse power go look it up cuz you really dont know. remember you still need mounts the wiring and alot of other stuff and you will have lots of problems and will take a while

How much boost do you run it on? ct26 turbos are good for no more than like 8psi because of ceramic bearings

@TheCanadianKush 8 psi? You're joking right? It just starts getting wet at 8psi. I've been running 14. They don't start putting out hot air until 15 and beyond.

how much did you spend on this setup? i have a 3sgte mr2 and my brother has the 5sfe and we want to turbo it with this set up.

Approximately 700 dollars. I could've went much cheaper though. You can use all stock 3S-GTE parts and make a really cheap kit. The only part that will cost a good amount is the turbo.

haha might as well do a real ''3sgte" swap.. have more power, less problems. but props to any mr2.
darkwarrior1986 2 years ago
Thanks for the props. You're right, I should've just went with the swap. The only parts I actually paid for was the intercooler though. Everything else I got either for free or through trades. So a 5S-FTE seemed like a great idea at the time.
I got a new turbo and it runs fine now, but I agree; in hindsight I wish I had just did a 3rd gen 3S-GTE swap and be done with it.
