Thomas Morris Past Jazz Masters: The Bull Blues (E flat No. 1 Blues)

A classic 1920s Jazz recording on an unusual German release:
Beka A 4157 [Originally Okeh 8075 (Mx. No.: S-71583-C)]
New York, May 1923

  • Wonderful label! As for the recording, it is up to Okeh's high standards.

  • Undoubtedly, Beka (as well as Odeon) was a German label owned by the Lindström company. If you listen carefully, you notice the paradox difference: While Lindström's own (German) recordings sound pretty average, all their borrowings from Okeh are technically superior. However for historical reasons, and in many cases for better pressing quality, I always prefer German copies!

  • That intro was the exact melody of Ellington's "What Am I Here For?"!

  • The best from two worlds: Okeh's superior recording technique and the excellent European pressing :-)
