  • You know, most people study an art simply because they want to study that art. Any fool can jump from the shadows, kick you in the neck and call it a martial art. Even so, the greatest master in martial arts can be killed by a ranging lunatic with a sword or knife.

A karateka may be hit over the head with a club. Then again, a chess player may anticipate a confrontation and choose to avoid it.

  • There is 'practical striking', it's called atemi, and can be applied to any point of opening (tsuki), be it head, ribs, stomach, or crotch.

There are body throws, like sumi otoshi or aiki otoshi.

What happens in a real physical confrontation is that the other person tries to kill you. Aikidoka train to stay in control of their body and mind in any situation. It's a basic budo tenet. You can have 5 years experience as a kickboxer and get your face bashed in too.

    THAT is reality.

  • @sq2pegroundhole I'm sorry to hear of your bad experience with Aikido. Perhaps you didn't train in it for very long. At our dojo (in the Iwama style), we have many members who have to use their Aikido everyday as prison guards and other positions in law enforcement.

  • @LostInTheSound

I attended a seminar led by Mary Heiny Sensei, and she said that she was in this video. The third Uke looks like her to me.

  • I hope that people don't practice this foolishness with the intention of actually being able to protect themselves. There is ZERO practical striking, no body throws and no grappling. Guess what guys -- THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS IN A REAL PHYSICAL CONFRONTATION. I used to think Aikido training was useful too. That is, until I was in a real confrontation and woke up to reality. Don't wait until you're beat up or injured to figure this out. You could seriously get hurt otherwise.

  • Have you ever done Aikido? My bet is no. It sounds like you are a know it all. Truth is you may be scared of anythng that is different. That is the truth of the matter. Have a good day nonetheless.

  • Since you haven't trained and don't understand what you say makes you look stupid. If you did you might understand better. Look carefully and understand at kumano the techniques all started with Atemi ( a strike, poke, headbutt, whatever...)to get the uke off balance and then the technique came from the response to that. So for self defense you would need to look before the video begins. Using these techniques for defense would be advanced moves.

  • Doubt it. Either you're lying or you were fighting those who had ABSOLUTELY NO CONCEPT of wrestling or karate. Unless, that is, you can back up your statements with video. I imagine you couldn't. And why? Because you're full of shit.

  • Wow, so who exactly are you referring to? I'm assuming yourself since you obviously attempted to insult me yet you only make yourself look absolutely foolish and educated when you can't even spell "DUMB ASS" ya fuckin' retard.

  • dumass !!!
