I always thought Alydar was the better horse. His achilles was that he never changed lead. I think you have a different rivalry if he had. However, Affirmed and Alydar were both great. Yes, in their 4 year old season, Affirmed was "superior". However, Alydar got nicked up in their last meeting at the 78 Travers with some sort of foot injury and was never the same after that.
Easy Goer must have had the same bad luck that his dad had. I could see why so many people were bewildered that Affirmed was able to get the best of him so many times.
On three separate occasions in his career, Alydar had won consecutive races impressively only to lose to Affirmed when he surely looked like the better horse.
If you look at his Derby preps, his Derby loss is kind of a shock, as his performance in the Travers. I know he ran well, but the way he was running, he should have won
Affirmed and Alydar came back as 4 year olds and Affirmed really solidified himself as the superior horse. Alydar was 2 for 6 at age 4, with only a grade 3 score. Affirmed won 6 grade 1 races in 79', carried 128, 130, and 132 lbs to victory in grade 1s, won in California and New York, and beat Spectacular Bid to close his career. Head to head: Affirmed 7 Alydar 3. Career grade 1 wins: Affirmed 14 Alydar 6. Affirmed MADE his luck with his tactical speed;that speed set him apart from Alydar.

My all time favorite horse. What races those would have been with Slew, Bid and Afffirmed such a shame he got injured
