Unable to obtain criminal accountability in her 20-year old son Justin McWilliams' hit and run death due to a loophole in the Florida Statutes, Jamie McWilliams took her fight to Tallahassee. After speaking before more than a dozen committees in the Florida House and Senate over a 2-years, the Florida Legislature unanimously approved The Justin McWilliams Act, effective October 1, 2006. The genesis of this law requires the driver of a vehicle involved in a crash occurring on public or private property, that results in injury or death, to immediately stop the vehicle and remain at the scene until emergency vehicles arrive. It further increases the penalty to a 1st Degree Felony for Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Death, up to 30-years in prison and a $10,000. Fine. Jamie McWilliams further states that she hopes to educate teenagers about the choices they make and the impact of those choices on the lives of those that love them. Video graciously provided by WFTV-9.
