This video is a general contribution/response to a load of talk that's been going on in the community about the changes that have happened to youtube that have resulted in a 'dying' community and the impossibility for smaller youtubers to have any sort of impact.
I recommend you watch these first to get an idea if you don't already:

Andrew's (AndrewBravener) video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apr0wEAKk3s

Dan's (pogobat) video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqxS5UAmtsc

Simon's (1992Jarhead) video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7PT6DDlqnw

In this video I incoherently ramble for a while about the youtube community.
I have no video editing software as my proper laptop is in for repair so I'm sure there's a bunch of gunk in here that isn't especially conducive to my point but I think I covered everything.

If I wasn't clear, my main point is this: If we can find a way for youtube to profit off harbouring and promoting the works of a community and of 'smaller youtubers'; implement infrastructure that is conducive to such a community in a way that isn't reflective of the old paradigms of media; and also to be able to do this without hindering what is youtube's current breadwinners, then we will see a resurgence of a youtube that is more familiar (and probably better) to what we once knew. This is so much easier said than done, yet not impossible. This is the internet, anything is possible (at zombocom).

Also, I swear loads in this. Wow. I need to work on that.

This is epic procrastination. I have third year university finals in physics in about two weeks that I know nothing for and here I am making youtube videos about social media. I need to sort out my priorities...

  • The thumbnail led me to believe this video would contain far more interpretive dance.

  • @MusicFromBlueSkies Bitches don't know about my jazz hands

  • I miss the days you used to make music video content instead of rants.

  • @jecht94 They will return when I have time to make them. It's kinda impossible to balance a physics degree with making music videos; not to mention work with the record label and the band and other more personal matters. I don't want to make half arsed alphabecover videos, I want to make good content and videos I actually want to watch. I'll make them again when I have the time and effort to do so, but right now I don't. I'm sorry, I hope this is at all reassuring, I do feel bad about it :(

  • dude. i have been wondering about this for a whie and i totally agree that the big dogs are in charge... RWJ is plastered everywhere... and youtube will continue to do that just to make money... the way we bring the community back is to just talk to the people watching..

ask for their opinions and do gatherings together.. this is the only way.. we dont need to monetize a community.. because then your back in with the business side..

love what you was trying to say tho

    hope to see you soon

  • @5K1TZ2006 Nah, I agree, WE don't have to monetise it, youtube has to. What you're talking about is making the best of the current situation and I think you're right. I'm talking about improving the site by shifting it away from the the old paradigms of media, making the site even more web 2.0 whilst at the same time not sacrificing the main breadwinners for the site and also making it more natural and still profitable for Youtube. It's rather ideological but I think it's feasible.

  • ALTERNATIVELY, all the people who want the community to come back can get together, become big as a group so YouTube can monetise off the community through its content and everyone will be happy! :D

  • Come back to youtube please? :)

  • build a blog, add a toplist. Add yt channels to the toplist then buy traffic. People that send the most traffic to the blog get the most back to their channel.

  • ....it's no wonder the less popular users remain exactly that. Back in the day, a feature would mean instant ascension into the better known echelon, and it was this sort of instant recognition that levelled the playing field. Pretty much anyone with an interesting video could suddenly become a star. It doesn't happen like that these days, which is sad. In my opinion, the reason the community has broken down is because there is nothing to help out the newbies. It's just the same big users.

  • Dammit...I've not had the internet for two months and I miss an awesome debate. Oh well, here's my two cents:

The vast majority of the top Youtubers were at some point featured on the Youtube frontpage (and I mean back when it actually mattered, not the sorry excuse for a feature you get these days). When half the feature spots go to the people that are already big (you might find the latest Charlie vid in the most viewed, talked, favourited spots all simultaneously)...

  • i forgot Dan Brown...lol. i'm honestly happy for the people who get paid for making videos. kudos to them for making money doing what they love.

  • This video is ridiculously correct.

  • Wanna say - Totally agree with you 100%, but also congratulations for doing this well with no editing! I'd suck at this!
