On 26th June 2009 - as the school year came to its end - enraged local parents blockaded and re-occupied Wyndford Primary in protest at Glasgow City Councils planned demolition of one of their few remaining community facilities and the drastic impact it will have on their children's lives.
The political credibility of the Labour Party majority within Glasgow City Council has been called into question as they have pushed ahead with a decision to close or merge 13 primary schools and 12 nurseries despite the fact that 96% of responses to the official consultation with the local communities have been against their plans.
The closures have unleashed storms of protest across the Glasgow. Parents have formed a city wide Save Our Schools campaign which has organised marches, rallies, occupations, legal challenges, cavalcades, mass city centre street vigils, local fĂȘtes, press conferences, lobbying of the Scottish Parliament, human rings around schools and nurseries as well as speakers to national trade union conferences. The parents campaign has attracted ongoing national news media interest with ongoing coverage in press, television, radio and on-line media.
