Film is Losing Steam

• ARRI, Panavision, and Aaton have all quietly ceased production of film cameras recently
• Bill Russell, VP of ARRI says that "the demand for film cameras on a global basis has all but disappeared" predictin that in 2-3 years it might be 85% digital and 15% film
• Aaton introduced its last film camera (Penelope) three years ago and sold only 50-60 of them
• Panavision built its last 35mm (Milennium XL) in late 2009 (used in newest Indiana Jones movie)
• Jean-Pierre Beauviala (founder of Aaton) believes that stereoscopic 3D has "accelerated the demise of film," because film is so hard to sync
• Deluxe and Technicolor are in plans to downsize and divide film printing and distribution between each other
• Technicolor's CMO, Ahmad Ouri said, "We have been planning our transition from film to digital...we know one day film won't be around."
• In July of this year, more than half the US theaters have digital screens
• Patrick Corcoran (Director of Media and Research for the National Association of Theatre Owners, NATO) predicts, "Sometime in 2013, all [theater] screens will be digital...it'll be absolutely necessary to switch to Digital Cinema to survive."
• Chris Nolen (Dark Knight, Inception) and Darren Aronofsky () go out of their way to shoot film, IMAX even...
• Film vs Digital:
o Digital is essentially free once you have the camera and storage, you pay for each foot of film (stock and processing)
o Digital brags to be higher resolution than film because it can have more pixels on the sensor, but the pixels don't cover the whole sensor, captures data all over the whole film...the scanners are what's lacking
o Digital you have less dynamic range and you also have compression
o Digital has better low-light capabilities, film has better highlights
o You always hear people trying to get their digital footage to have the "film look", not vice versa
o For more comparisons of digital vs film, check out Zacuto's "The Great Camera Shootout 2011"

  • Razr or Nexus?

  • @SourNaik That's a tough call...I'd have to actually have some time with them both before I'd make my final decision. For now I'll say Nexus just for ICS. Thanks for the comment!

  • Guess I need to buy up some film before I can't

  • @cbird54 And the chemicals to process it, lol.

  • @lsaintignan eet wawz teh schteenkee

  • EPIC FIRST SWAT FART!!!!

  • @TheEnglishRedneck45 yeah, really is the deal killer on an otherwise awesome sounding device!

  • I'm no techie, but the way you can't replace the battery would kill it for me. I don't give a damn if it has all those juicy numbers - it sounds impractical with that battery shit.
