France is home to the world's most famous pastellists, such as Degas, Renoir, Quentin de La Tour and Toulouse-Lautrec.

The pastel technique is a worthy rival of oil painting, especially in portraiture, landscape and still-life painting. Contrary to common belief, pastel is the only painting technique that never ages, maintaining the delicacy of its tones indefinitely.

Pierre Vallon was one of those pastel artists and a respectful lover of nature who aroused the public interest in the art of pastel. Vallon developed his own personal technique of creating dynamic paintings using pastel with a palette knife.
