Kate was the first person in a persistent vegetative state to be given a PET scan. Though physically unresponsive and unable to communicate, the scan showed unexpected brain activity.

  • my mom is currently in a PVS and she's been like that for about 3 and a half months now. I sure hope she can recover like this woman. I miss talking with her :)

  • I hope my brother is given the same chance.

  • What a wonderful story and gives hope to people and for my husband Gary Harvey who say there is none. That is one thing that no one can take away. Thank you Kate for sharing your experience. I may now understand what my husband maybe feeling.

  • inspirational woman

  • this is so disgusting it must continue to be exposed!

  • This is such a nightmare. I'm so happy she recovered and is at least able to communicate with people. The ultimate misery of being in this circumstance is the complete inability to communicate with anyone. I experienced a brief glimpse of this last year when I was in the hospital with pneumonia and collapsed lung. I was sedated and hooked up to all sorts of machines, unable to move or communicate, but still conscious. The small amount of time I was like this was like my worst nightmare.

  • I so sad and yet enlightened to have heard of her story....more people need to hear about this. I hope she lives a fulfilling life the best she can.

  • did you get that from the media? the media was part of the problem supporting Michael Schiavo's case who clearly wanted his wife dead or out of the way and never wanted to rehabilitate her. what is so bad about giving custody to her parents if he didn't want to care for her? why the urgency to kill an innocent woman? seems to me he had things to hide.

  • @dhom100 No need to re-visit. An autopsy was done, her brain was mush. It was even WORSE than what they thought. The parts of her brain that recognized speech, interpreted sounds, etc, were dead.

  • Thanks.
