And now as Selena stared at the blank walls of the room, she saw her childhood flash before her eyes; the flower printed bed spread from when she was girly little toddler to the black nail polish stains on the carpet when she spilled the nail polish everywhere when she was in her early teens. The crack that ran along her wall from when she kicked it with her foot; angry at her mother. Yes, Selena had been a rebel growing up. It all seemed to start once she hit the terrible teens and befriended the wrong crowd; getting referrals, lunch detention, in school suspension, and a DUI at the mere age of 16. But, those days became the past to her when she met her first love, William, at 17. To Selena, he had saved her from the life she was leading the path to. He had shown her how to live her life right and to the fullest with no regrets. In Selena's heart, she would never forget every piece of advice he gave her and all the love they had shared. But she would also never forget how her heart had been torn out and crushed the day his life was taken away too soon by a drunk driver. Since that day, Selena had never touched or even looked at alcohol since. Deep down, Selena knew William wouldn't want her to cry over him and forget the life she had. Instead, she decided to get off her butt and live life even better than she had been. She wanted William's passion for life to live on.

Her lids drooped over her chocolate eyes as she made her way over to her bed. She sat down quietly and picked up her guitar that she had laying next to her bed. As her fingers strummed over the chords, she hummed softly to herself an unknown tune.

Later that night, Selena and her family were gathered around the dinner table, sharing a dinner together. The ham steamed into the air and the aroma filled the entire cabin. "Looks good, Mom!" Tanner said jittery, ready to dig in any moment. "Not too fast, short stuff." Selena mumbled as she took the spoon out from his hand.

"Hey! I had that first!" Tanner complained to his older sister. "Haven't you heard of ladies first?" Selena shot back as she scooped up mashed potatoes and slabbed them on her plate. "Yes, I have! That's why I don't think you should have any say in taking the food first!" Tanner smirked. "Do you want these mashed potatoes shoved in---" Selena started to shoot back before her mother cut her off. "Selena! Tanner! Stop it and just eat!"

The rest of dinner was eaten in an awkward silence. The only sound in the entire house was the soft connection of the utensils and the plates at the table. After ten or fifteen minutes with no words said, Selena's father cleared his throat to speak up. All three of their eyes lifted up to look at him, giving him their full attention.

"Selena, Tanner, your mother and I have been meaning to talk to you two about something." He started, putting his fork and knife down. Her mother's green eyes looked at her two children then back at her husband, nodding. He paused for a minute before diving into the whole point of the tension in the air. "We're thinking of making this cabin our permanent home."

Selena and Tanner's reactions couldn't have been more different. While a huge smile spread across Tanner's face, Selena's jaw about hit the table. This couldn't be happening, she thought strongly. "What do you mean that this is going to be our permanent home?!" "After two weeks here, we'll go back down to Dallas and put our house up for sale and come back here. Its getting too expensive to be paying for two homes."

Selena stood up, furious. "We can't just uproot! Why don't we sell this house?! We all have lives down in Dallas! And, there isn't an area big enough for Charlee!"

"Lena, calm down." Her mother cooed as she placed her hand on top of Selena's. Selena immediately pulled it out from under hers and crossed her arms across her chest. "I'm not going to calm down about this. There's nothing up here."

"I don't mind moving up here." Tanner piped up. Rolling her eyes at him, Selena mumbled to herself about her little brother.

"Lena, since we are most likely moving up here, and with there not being enough room and money to support Charlee..." The soft words ran off her mother's lips, letting Selena able to finish the rest.

"Sell Charlee?!" Selena screeched. That was it. Selena ran to the front door and slipped on her jacket and boots before swinging the door open. "Over my dead body." And with that, the door slammed behind her. Her feet carried her to the stable just outside. The black sky was painted above her with twinkling lights in the sky. The snow underneath her feet was frozen and barely able to walk on. She opened the stable and threw a quick saddle on the back of Charlee. With one swing of her body, she was on top of Charlee and running out into the black forest.

  • Are her parents crazy? But wait if Selena is turning 19 shouldn't she be in college? Unless she is not going. But hey even if I wasn't going to college I would have gotten and job and moved on out.

  • Geez can't her parents just tell that Selena would rather give them up than Charlee, any day?

  • can I just hit her mom? please?
