Title and End Credits from the brilliant BBC production Smiley's People, starring Sir Alec Guinness as John le Carré's legendary spymaster George Smiley. For Curd Jürgens, this was the last thing he filmed before he passed away. And watch the End Credits for the name of an actor who had one of his first ever screen appearances in the tiny part of the Savoy Hotel's Head Porter Brownlow ...

Music by Patrick Gowers, who also wrote the soundtrack for Jeremy Brett's Holmes series.

  • try reading the book with smiley as villain I mean a terrible villain and Karla as worthy in a way of our admiration--not politics here just who is the better man? You will be surprised--think about how Smiley "seduces" dying Connie--as brutal a scene as I have seen--Smiley is a sterile man. Just give it a read with those possibilities I don't know what le carre intended but see what you come up with.

  • The whole point is to show what a dirty business it all is. There are no heroes, just villains, playing "The Game". I never saw Smiley as a hero, although in this special case it's about a friend, not just about politics. His methods are as immoral as the other sides, and always were. He does his job with the cold, business-like, unemotional precision of a clock-maker. I admire his brains, though.

  • thespilian thank you for the information, and thank you once again for posting this video. i will have to do some research on Parick Gowers .

  • You're very welcome. =)

  • the book was great and the tv series was just as good [a rare event]. does anyone know where the music for the theme came from or was it written especially for this series. it's the most hauntingly beautiful music i have ever heard and has been my favorite peice for years . thank you thespillian for posting it.

  • The music was witten by Patrick Gowers, who also scored the Sherlock Holmes series wirh Jeremy Brett.. There was a Soundtrack LP of it with some liner notes in 1982 (I just have it here) - I have no idea if it's available on CD, although I doubt so ...

  • @Thespilian The information on Patrick Gowers is very much appreciated. Thank you.

  • 'Strickland HUSH!'

  • Truly a piece of music to stir the soul, particularly from 1.59 onwards, not diminished by the years.

  • patrick gowers = genius.

  • vivascargill, you make some very good points, but you do perhaps go a bit far. Smiley never ordered the death of a civilian, say, who "knew too much," or had a subordinate executed for bungling a job. The Sarratt inquisitors might have been unpleasant or even a little rough, but read about Jim Priddeaux in Karla's hands again. Karla had four people killed--and went after a fifth--when he must have known he could have simply defected and had his daughter cared for.

  • @Thespilian good insight and I think probably correct--spying diminishes the human person. However, the reading I am suggesting deals with personalities and Karla brutal to others is willing to be brutal to himself (in Tinker Tailor he has been in a labor camp--not mentioned in the film) My sense is that oddly--murderous as he is Karla retains a vestigial humanity--I think Smiley recognizes this. But Smiley is sterile no wife no children--I am interested in a possible reading. Thanks
