Fast forward works but the play take up does not seem to have the jam to run reel. As soon as the tape gets slack , it shuts downAll capstans and rollers turn free!
Electrolytic capacitors failing, especially on the capstan and head drum motor circuits, is fairly common for Sony Betamax decks using this chassis from around the year the SL-2400 was made.
For this chassis, the capstan motor only operates as a capstan; the reels are driven by idler, which in turn is driven by its own BSL motor on the reel table assembly.
The cause of this could be any number of things, but if it were me, I'd start with the capstan motor control board. The capacitors on the motor's control board are notorious for going bad. Additionally, I'd replace the pinch roller while they're still available. Check to see if the capstan is working. It's a shiny silver pole encased in a gray housing; to the left of the rubber pinch roller (all to the right of the drum assembly (big silver drum).

Your guess is the most likely diagnosis.
