@filebox1 Chattanooga, TN is in the process of changing all of their single piece(no ladder in the house) engine companies into quints as well. Doesn't take the place of a ladder company but if they're not gonna staff a seperate ladder then it only makes sense.
-
just the way they've always done it, dont think we have any fire depts up here with units called "quints"
-
should be called quint 2, not engine 2...ya it can be used as a pumper...but its a quint...come on now...
-
Becuase it is both a ladder truck and pumper
for example our ladder is our second primary pumper..
-
Same ladder as ours (st. albans town)
Hp75 e-one with a typhoon cab

Lots of depts in the Metro Vancouver area in BC use quints. I guess that makes Canadian fire depts poor. LOL

Quints are not only cost effective, but manpower effective as well. many cities simply are hard pressed not only to contain costs, but to do so by limiting their most expensive and valuable asset manpower. In St. Louis,Mo. quints have been used efficentily for years. Richmond,Va. and many other cities also utilize these units. Now because of falling recruitment and aging staff, volunteer fire depts. are turning to quints.

Yeah very true man. My department has a Quint and a tower Ladder but our district is huge for having only 3 stations. Both are E-Ones; beautiful rigs.
Can someone pls explain to me why depts use quints as engines???

From what I've seen, it's cost effectiveness. Think about it, you get 2 types of trucks for the relative price of 1. Plus, you have the availability of a stick in area where you couldn't or wouldn't be able fit another aerial apparatus. And just remember, there are still departments out there that are jacks of all trades and masters of none.

This is Burlington Fire Engine 2, not Montpelier.
