University Of The Highlands And Islands Launched With A Procession - 3

The Univeristy of the Highlands and Islands gained official approval on 1st February 2011. On Thursday 25th August 2011 a celebration of Scotland's new university took place at Eden Court Theatre, Inverness. 800 visitors and guests joined the university court to join in the presentation of the new mace toi be used at future degree awarding ceremonies, presenting new robes in their purple and silver colours. Songs and poetry, speeches from a number of the dignitaries of the new uiniversity and an addAress by Michael Russell MSP on video all contributed to a great sense of ocassion. There then followed a procession from Eden Court to the Town House, Inverness for a reception from Highland council who along with other northern councils have wholeheartedly supported the idea of the new university from the start of the idea in 1991.
