This is a video of an actual gastric bypass procedure completed in October of 2010. It is performed and narrated by Dr. Russell Gornichec, bariatric surgeon and medical director of INTEGRIS Weight Loss Center
The gastric bypass procedure is performed laparoscopically and is widely considered the gold standard in weight loss surgery because of its exceptional obesity related disease resolution rates. Excess weight loss in most gastric bypass patients is greater than that of other surgical procedures.
In this procedure part of the stomach is cut away and the small intestine is rerouted in order to limit the amount of food that is ingested and limit the number of calories absorbed by the intestine. This combination of restriction and malabsorption respectively achieves rapid and sustained weight loss.
This video will give you a good idea of how the process works and why it works - right from the surgeon's mouth.
