2011 3M 50' Anniversary in Decatur, Alabama
The first activity on the 3M site was the establishment of the chemical plant in 1961. It was followed by building activities on the film plant the following year.
The site production portfolio expanded again with the merger of 3M's fluoroelastomer business with the German company, Hoescht, to form Dyneon in 1997. Decatur was the key producer of the 3M products involved in the merger. In 1998, Dyneon built its own facility on the Decatur site for production of these materials. In 1999, 3M purchased Dyneon from Hoescht and it now operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of 3M. The Dyneon operations expanded once again in 2003 when 3M's Dyneon business purchased Solvay's Decatur Polyvinylidene Fluoride plant.
