DAY 14: PIZZA MONTH 2007 - L'ALLEGRIA

LOCATION: L'ALLEGRIA (44th Street and 9th Avenue, NYC)

GUEST(S): Robin Rothman

ORDER: 2 slices of cheese and 2 slices of meatball

PIZZA REPORT: At L'Allegria you know exactly what goes into each pizza...including the labor. This is because it all happens on the other side of your table. You watch as the chef kneeds and stretches the dough, then spoons the tomato sauce and lightly sprinkles it with shredded mozzarella cheese before placing it into the gas powered brick oven. Sometime during the cooking process a puddle of grease appeared on our pie making for a rather wet tasting and heavy pizza. I should have ordered fresh mozzarella.

ATMOSPHERE: Although there are hardly any seats, there is very little wait to get your order in. The brick oven only feet away from everywhere creates a warm and cozy atmosphere in this relatively inexpensive ($8-9 each without drinks) pizza place located so near Times Square. I will be back.

VERDICT: 3 out of 5

MISC:
1. Robin Rothman and I ate here before my softball game. Not the best meal right before a game. I went 3 for 4 though and pitched two scoreless innings so it wasn't all bad.
2. There is an expensive sit down restaurant next door to L'Allegria with the same name. If you just want pizza, look around the corner.
