Medly of "It's Not For Me To Say" and "Chances Are", from "A Johnny Mathis Christmas", the concert on 12/23/11 in Cupertino, CA. The video is awful, as it was taken on an iPhone, but the sound is fairly clear. What a voice! He had some in the audience crying at times, it was so beautiful.
The audience will filled with people of all ages. I'm not that old, and have been to concerts in the past few years by Dire Straits, Paul McCartney, Roger Waters, and Eric Clapton. But I must say this was one of the best I've ever seen (although Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits was fabulous as well!). Johnny still sounds just like he does on his albums - his voice is strong and solid. He danced around the stage, singing both Christmas songs and many of his well-known standards. He was backed up by a great orchestra, and by several band members who have been with him for decades, include the incomparable Gil Reigers on guitar (watch his fingers fly!).
The intermission was graced by Brad Upton, a comedian. Many in the audience didn't know what to expect from him, as we'd never seen a comedian with a classical concert like this. But he was the funniest person I've ever seen (and I've been to a lot of live comedy shows). By the end of his 25 minute skit, he had the audience laughing so hard they were crying, and I was having trouble even catching my breath!
Our group of 6 went to see Johnny not knowing what to expect, as he's been performing for so many years. He looked wonderful, and sounded even better. If you closed your eyes you'd swear you were listening to one of his albums from 55 years earlier! We really couldn't have been more pleased. This was a lovely concert and definitely put us in the Christmas mood. We're all still glowing two days later. If you haven't seen Johnny in concert, don't miss it!!
Thanks for this post I loved hi, from the 60's he's ages gracefully and beautiful voice, an inspiration.
I have never seen him and never will I guess, so thanks for this...Love from New Zealand
