-Clip 5-
The Real Richard Nixon
Vol. 2: "Pat"
Interview with Frank Gannon

In this interview/documentary segment, President Richard Nixon discusses his 1960 presidential campaign against John F. Kennedy, his 1962 gubernatorial race against California governor Pat Brown, and his 1968 presidential election against Hubert Humphrey. He particularly focuses on his wife's reactions to these events, including her very negative reaction to his decision to run for governor of California and her emotional response to his winning the presidency in 1968. The documentary clip also covers some of Pat Nixon's activities as First Lady of the United States.

The video clip comes from 38 hours of interviews that Nixon did with Frank Gannon in 1983 during eight days of interviews spread out over several months. Gannon used to work for Nixon and was well acquainted with the former president. Subsequently, Nixon is more at ease and open here than in most of his recorded interviews.

Originally there here had been no clear intention to create a documentary on Pat Nixon when the interviews took place. The segments on Pat came from different days, originally interspersed among a variety of topics.

  • Interviews done in a calm, PI-free environment like this one are a great way to get to know a person. No President has ever done such an interview, and that's kind of sad, because I know almost feel as though I know Mr. Nixon personally.

  • I agree - Interestingly, in retrospective, he seemed like a likable person unlike what history sometimes says about him.

  • @billthestinker Kennedy would have won even if he lost the state of Illinois, moron.

  • @billthestinker Kennedy would have won even if he lost the state of Illinois, moron.

  • Don`t forget that JFK won West Virginia which was mostly protestant It was said that JFK stole that election fair and square.Nixon had a huge head start being a great politician and being Ike`s vice president who was very popular.

  • I wonder how the world would have been different if Nixon HAD won

  • Nixon would have won the 1960 election except for hanky-panky in cook county!

  • It was media bias that I believe kept the real Nixon from shining through...I agree, it's quite sad that no other POTUS has done such an interview.

  • "Hanky-panky in Cook County..." Love this man!
