Velocity defines how hard a MIDI note is struck when played. An easy way of creating dynamics and giving your MIDI parts a more natural feel is by increasing or decreasing the MIDI note's velocity. This tutorial explains how to access and affect a MIDI notes velocity within Logic Studio.

  • I have a question I doubt you can help me .. I'm using Logic Platinum ver 5.1 and I made a song using the midi notes, however I want to add more bass to the midi sound. Where's the bass control?? e.g. they have "Fretless bass" as a sound, I just want to increase the bass of it.

  • @Freeportku001 Hi, thanks for your question. If all you want to do is add more low frequencies to your bass sound you can do two things. First open an EQ plugin on that track and cut the high frequencies, this will bring out the low end without having to boost it too much as it's not competing with the higher frequencies. Second boost the low frequencies a little until you feel the sound your going for. Let us know if this helps.

  • Thanks so much! Very simple and quick tutorial.

  • @paeturek Hi, glad to hear our tutorial video helped out. Thanks for watching!

  • is that the quickest way to change velocity? i think it could be. Any one know of any others?

  • @bedroom58 Hi, thanks for getting in touch. Another way of changing MIDI velocity values is by using the Hyper Editor. You find this feature next to the Score Editor tab across the bottom menu, right above the Transport Bar.

  • hi, it does not work when I read the notes...

I could change the velocity as in the video, the note changes color,

but when I play the line, all notes have the same strength...

  • Is it possible to use the mod wheel or volume controls with the hyper editor and have it enter the velocity with playback of pre-existing midi information?

  • I couldn't get the volume lower on the note I needed. Very annoying :(

  • @myscript haha no problem, glad i could help :)

  • @Bostonian91 . Tks...I had seen my buddy do that a million times and it took me forever@#$%?& I couldn't figure it out until now:) Tks!

  • @Bostonian91

Haha Its a small world mate, soon enough we'll be doing our own tutorials matt xD

  • Hey guys. I find an easier way is to select the notes you want to change, click the velocity tool and hold the click button down and move up and down. It changes the colour of the note instead. I find it easier :)

  • @ArGyProductions haha oh ray, we stumbled across the same tutorial lol.. p.s its matt

  • Hey is there a way to change all the velocities to the same number at the same time?

  • @JackBz Glad the tutorial helped. Let us know if there any other music production topics you'd like to see covered.

  • This helped!

  • simple and helpful! as all tutorials should be. thanks!

  • Ive bin tryin to figure that out for AGES! So simple!

    Thanks.

    :D

  • Hi, I used your tutorial to change some velocity on one of my tracks and it worked out great. The problem I have is I went back onto the screen to change a few more notes and the screen changed into what I can only describe as automation lines rather then velocity notes.....not sure if that makes sense but how do I revert it back to the original view?

    Any help would be wicked

    Cheers
