July 31, 2008: About 3 months ago two broods of barn owls in Olympia, Washington, were mysteriously attacked and killed under very unusual circumstances. Abundant freshly killed rodents were available in the two owl boxes, so lack of food was probably not a factor. We don't know what caused the attacks.

"The two owl boxes are only 35-45 feet distance from each other in the attic of the building and interactions and competition between the owls was suspected but never confirmed. Both owl pairs left after their broods died. Department staff cleaned up the owl boxes and a pair of barn owls returned to original owl box and starting laying eggs. We apologize for the delay in getting the cam on-line but equipment shortages and sometime to observe our owl pair was necessary and now here once more are 5 (count them) almost grown barn owlets."

  • After the tragedy at this Barn Owl box (and the one on the other side of the barn)in April, I wanted to post a very happy video when these owlets were hatched. This is a little celebration. :)

  • I Love Owls, these are just too sweet. My hubby and i rescued a barn owl with a broken wing....we named him Hooter...he was rehabilitated and released back into the wild. Thanks 4 posting!

  • I'm glad he could be healed and released back into the wild to get on with his life. Some of these birds cannot be released because their injuries prevent them from flying and hunting for their food. Luckily, we have a few facilities (never enough) that will give these birds a permanent home. I am fond of the Cascades Raptor Center in Eugene, Oregon. I've "adopted" two of their raptors. They have over 60 birds and take excellent care of them. Thanks for rescuing the barn owl! :)
