When a Liberal Member of Parliament defected to the Green Party of Canada and became its first ever M.P., the Party's Leader, Elizabeth May, demanded her rightful place in the 2008 federal election leaders debates - something that had never been allowed before.
After an offensive attempt by the Canadian broadcast conglomerate, Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper and NDP leader Jack Layton to block her participation, an unprecedented public outcry forced them to back down.
This video was shot outside the English debate at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on Oct. 2, 2008, as well as at the Green Party debate viewing location during and afterward. It features clips of Elizabeth May during the debate and her brief, post debate appearance at the viewing location.
